 Henderson Middle School STEM Certification

Current School STEM Coordinator: Ms. Angela Garnett

Henderson Middle School began a journey towards STEM certification a few years ago. The long and dedicated effort of our faculty & staff culminated in AdvancED certification in the spring of 2018. The acronym of STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math and involves more than just doing hands-on activities. It is a concept of engaging students in real-world problem solving and project based learning. It requires teachers who are willing to give students the freedom to explore, investigate, collaborate, design, test and redesign their own solutions to STEM challenges faced by our society.

In an effort to provide rigorous STEM instruction, Henderson Middle School currently has in place an accelerated math curriculum that enables students to take High School Coordinate Algebra in their last year of middle school. To satisfy another Georgia STEM requirement, High School Physical Science is also offered to 8th grade students. Initially, the HMS STEM initiative started with only three academics teams offering STEM instruction. The program has now gone schoolwide, with all academic teams bringing STEM instruction and projects into their classrooms.

Last year our Henderson Middle School Foundation provided financial support to procure a STEM curriculum for our teachers. The STEM curriculum implemented at Henderson Middle School is directly aligned to the instructional activities that can be found at the following website: www.definedstem.com
